How to start to read research article effectively ? knowledge of physics

Reading research articles is not an easy task.  If you are new to the research field, then this post can be helpful for you.

You need to read the whole article, understand the subject matter and extract the contents in your own words.  These are three main steps of reading research articles effectively.

  1. Read the whole article carefully
  2. Try to understand the subject matter
  3. try to explain the contents in your own words
After you have searched and downloaded research articles related to the subject of your research work, it is better to follow these steps to read the articles effectively.

When you open an article and have a glance at whole pages, you may find these sections.
  • Title of article
  • Author's names
  • Author's working institute's names
  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • methodology
  • results and discussion
  • conclusion
  • recommendation
  • references
These are very main sections that a research article must-have.

👉 Reading an article begins from the abstract section. This section tells you a short summary of the content of the article: a short introduction of title of article,  short information of method used to create and analyze data,  main findings of research work, and possible applications. From this section, you get an overall very short review of the article. You may find it difficult to understand the content of this section. However, it makes you decide whether read full article or not. So, spending 2 to 3 minutes reading this section may help you to save further time from reading unnecessary articles.

👉 Introduction section gives you information on the subject matter, review of previous studies on the related subject. Most of the sentences in this section may contain citations. You can get more information by reading articles visiting references as cited in this section. This section mainly tells you what have done before, what needs to be done next, and what the authors of the article have done to prepare this article. So read each sentence carefully and try to make short notes.

👉 Methodology section tells you about the methods and instruments used for generating and analyzing data for the research work. So, reading this section carefully is important to understand how to generate or get data, how to analyze data, which instrument is better for analyzing data and getting precise results.  So read this section carefully and make short notes.

👉 Results and Discussion section tells you about the main findings and helps you to learn how to interpret the plots of data.  This section shows the major work of the authors of the article. Try to understand Introduction and Methodology sections to understand results and discussions properly.
Make short notes on major findings of the article.

👉 Summary section is the short form of results and discussion section. In this section, the authors mention what they have done and what they have found. Notice the major findings that can be useful for your work.

👉 Most of the articles also contain a recommendation section. In this section, the authors mainly tell you what had been done before, what they have done, and what needs to be done next. They also tell you here possible ways to find better results. Actually, this section encourages you to continue the research work on a related topic.

👉 Finally, you can see the references used for preparing the article. Research articles contain references section to show that authors have used results or definitions from someone else's work while writing their paper.  One can not perform research work without reading previous papers. Therefore, it is one of the important parts of the research article to keep in mind.

These are the main sections of the article to be read. It is recommended to read each section thoroughly.
For a better understanding of the subject matter, you can repeat the reading.
